Synonym: (神农架群), Dagushi Gr, Baiguoshu Dolomite, and Wuziping Gr are thought to be different names for the same group
Lithology and Thickness
The Shennongjia Gr is composed of magnesian carbonate (dolomitic) rocks, clastic rocks and volcanic rocks. The carbonate rock contains a rich diversity of stromatolites and microplants. According to present subdivision, the group is subdivided into 12 formations from bottom to top: Yingwodong Fm, Dayanping Fm, Macaoyuan Fm, Luanshigou Fm, Dawokeng Fm, Kuangshishan Fm, Taizi Fm, Yemahe Fm, Wenshuihe Fm, Shicaohe Fm, Songziyuan Fm and Wagangxi Fm. [Macaoyuan Fm is now separated, and is lowermost Neoproterozoic.] The thickness is recorded as over 12680 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
In Shennongjia district the bottom of the formation is not seen; however, in north periphery of Huangling fault rise at Shanshuya-Xichahe, and Xiongjiapo-Kongzihe, it is in unconformable contact with the underlying Shuiyuesi Group (Luanshigou Fm?) of Paleoproterozoic (Li Fuxi et al., 1989).
Upper contact
The top was unconformably overlapped by the Liantuo Fm or the Nantuo Fm Tillite respectively. Schematic stratigraphic column indicates the next younger regional unit is the Macaoyuan Fm (formerly within this Shennongjia Gr)
Regional extent
Central-westernmost Hubei. It is mainly developed in Shennongjia Forest District, Hubei Province.
